Os mergulhadores da Grã-Bretanha receberão um impulso adicional em direção ao sonho olímpico de Tóquio 2020 – sediar a prestigiada World Series de Saltos Ornamentais no próximo ano.

A competição é exclusiva para os melhores competidores do mundo, que irão participar de todas as etapas, e em particular no evento final que será realizado no Centro Aquático de Londres a partir de 17 de maio 2019.

A British Swimming trabalhou em estreita colaboração com o Gabinete do Prefeito de Londres e o UK Sport para garantir o evento com a FINA, que é parte fundamental do programa de desenvolvimento para Tóquio 2020.

Jack Buckner, presidente-executivo da British Swimming, disse: “Estamos muito satisfeitos em receber a Série Mundial de Saltos Ornamentais de volta ao Reino Unido e ao London Aquatics Centre.
“Esta é a série de maior prestígio no mundo do mergulho e será uma excelente oportunidade para os nossos atletas mostrarem os seus talentos contra os melhores do mundo.
“Ter uma competição em casa garante aos nossos atletas a chance de se apresentar diante de uma torcida local e testar suas habilidades contra aqueles que enfrentarão nas Olimpíadas sem ter que viajar e se aclimatar para uma parte diferente do globo.”

As etapas de 2019 acontecerão no Japão, China, Canadá e Rússia, antes de fechar em Londres.

Inaugurada em 2007, a Diving World Series foi realizada pela última vez em Londres em 2015, com mergulhadores britânicos ganhando um ouro, duas pratas e três bronzes durante o evento em casa. Isso foi bom o suficiente para um segundo lugar na tabela de medalhas atrás da China.

Jack Laugher e Chris Mears ganharam uma medalha de prata neste evento, depois se tornaram os primeiros medalhistas de ouro olímpicos da Grã-Bretanha pouco mais de um ano depois. Tom Daley também ganhou um ouro no evento organizado por seu centro de treinamento.

Tom Daley disse: “O Centro Aquático de Londres é um local tão bom, e me sinto honrado não apenas por ter competido em uma Olimpíada aqui, mas também como minha base de treinamento.

“Eu sei que ter a World Series de Mergulho em Londres será ótimo para aqueles de nós com sorte suficiente para competir, mas também para os fãs do esporte em geral e para toda a cidade.”
O prefeito de Londres, Sadiq Khan, disse: “Estou muito feliz em receber este evento fantástico de volta a Londres em 2019. Eu sei o quanto londrinos e visitantes gostaram de ver alguns dos melhores mergulhadores do mundo competirem aqui nos últimos anos e eu ‘ Tenho certeza de que esta será outra grande competição neste local de classe mundial. ”

Esther Britten, Chefe de Grandes Eventos da UK Sport, acrescentou: “É brilhante ver este evento regressar ao Reino Unido pela oitava vez e acontecer no Aquatics Centre, um dos locais da Olimpíada de Londres 2012.

“Será vital para o público britânico fazer parte deste evento, torcendo por nossa riqueza em talentos de mergulho, já que atletas, incluindo medalhistas olímpicos, se preparam para os Jogos Olímpicos em 2020.”

Em 2017, a World Series viu 88 mergulhadores competindo de 16 países, com milhões de pessoas sintonizadas para assistir on-line ou pelas 14 emissoras internacionais que cobrem cada etapa.

Diving World Series returns to London

Britain’s divers will get an added boost towards their Tokyo 2020 Olympic dream – hosting the prestigious Diving World Series on home soil next year.

The competition is exclusive to the World’s best competitors, with dozens of World, Olympic and European champions guaranteed to be taking part across all four legs, and in particular the finale event which will be held at the London Aquatics Centre from the 17th to 19th of May 2019.

British Swimming has worked closely with the Mayor of London’s Office and UK Sport to secure the event with FINA, which is a key part of the Tokyo 2020 medal development programme.

Jack Buckner, chief executive of British Swimming said “We are delighted to welcome the Diving World Series back to the UK and the London Aquatics Centre.

“This is the most prestigious series in the diving world and will be a great opportunity for our outstanding divers to showcase their talents against the best in the world.

“Having a home competition ensures our athletes the chance to perform in front of a home crowd and test their skills against those they will face in the Olympics without having to travel and acclimatise to a different part of the globe.”

The 2019 legs will take place in Japan, China, Canada and Russia, before closing in London.

Inaugurated in 2007, the Diving World Series was last held in London in 2015 with British divers winning one gold, two silvers, three bronzes during their home event. This was good enough for a second place finish in the medal table behind China.

Jack Laugher and Chris Mears won a silver medal at this event, then went on to become Britain’s first Olympic gold medallists just over a year later. Tom Daley also won a gold at the event hosted by his training centre.

Tom Daley said: “The London Aquatics centre is such a great venue, and I feel honoured not only to have competed at an Olympics here, but also have it as my training base.

“I know having the Diving World Series in London will be great for those of us lucky enough to compete, but also for fans of sport generally and the entire city.”
The Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, said: “I’m delighted to welcome this fantastic event back to London in 2019. I know how much Londoners and visitors have enjoyed seeing some of the world’s top divers compete here in recent years and I’m sure this will be another great competition at this world-class venue.”

Esther Britten, Head of Major Events at UK Sport added: “It is brilliant to see this event returning to the UK for the eighth time, and to be taking place at the Aquatics Centre, one of London 2012’s legacy venues.

“It will be vital for the British public to be part of this event, cheering on our wealth of home grown diving talent, as athletes, including Olympic medallists, prepare for the Olympic Games in 2020.”

In 2017 the World Series saw 88 divers compete from 16 nations with millions tuning in to watch either online or via the 14 international broadcasters covering each leg.
