McSharry and Corby Among Record Breakers on Day 3
Six new Irish Records were set as the Irish Short Course Swimming Championships continued in Antrim today. Mona McSharry set her fourth record, Jack McMillan and Michael Hewitt set new junior standards while Alan Corby set a first national record in the 100m Individual Medley. Two relay records were set by UCD and Ards to conclude the third day of competition.
McSharry set her fourth record of the week in the days first event, the women’s 100m Individual Medley. The 18-year-old had set records in the 50m and 100m Freestyle earlier in the week, this time it was her own record of 1:00.66, set just weeks ago, that fell in 1:00.34 in the morning heats. In the final the Marlins swimmer clocked 1:00.43 for her fifth gold of the week.
National Centre Limerick’s Alan Corby stormed to 100m Individual Medley gold in the men’s final. It was the 21-year-olds first national record and was done in an impressive time of 54.32, he broke James Brown’s 2016 record of 54.88.
The records kept coming with McMillan next up in the 400m Freestyle. The Bangor swimmer, who had broken Andrew Bree’s 2003 200m Individual Medley senior record on Thursday, took half a second off his own Irish Junior Record (3:47.09) set at the 2017 Championships touching in 3:46.43.
Next to join the party was City of Belfast’s Michael Hewitt. Hewitt had broken McMillan’s 100m Butterfly Irish Junior Record by one hundredth of a second just weeks ago with a time of 54.61. In tonight’s final, the 18-year-old clocked 54.31 to take the silver medal. UCD’s John Higgins added to his 50m Butterfly title taking gold in the event in 53.31.
The last event of the night saw two further records fall as UCD topped the podium in the 200m Mixed Medley Relay in a new Irish Senior Record while Ards set a new junior standard for Bronze. The UCD team of Kate Kavanagh, Andrew Moore, John Higgins and Erin Riordan broke a 2017 UCD Record of 1:45.97 touching in 1:44.02. Ards quartet of Paddy Johnston, Jack Angus, Ellie McKibbin and Amelia Kane lowered an Ards Irish Junior Record (1:51.52) in 1:50.17.
Emma Reid and Maria Godden both took second national titles in their respective events. Reid added to 50m Butterfly gold taking the 100m title in 1:00.60, she was joined on the podium by Ards’ McKibbin (1:03.50) and her Bangor team mate Rachel Bethel (1:03.62). Godden, looking for the Backstroke treble, added to her 100m title with 200m gold in 2:13.62 ahead of Ards’ Kane (2:14.61) and Scarlett Armstrong (2:17.17)
Andrew Moore took his first title of the week in the 50m Breaststroke. The UCD swimmer had a comfortable win in 27.81 ahead of National Centre Limerick team mates Liam Doyle (28.63) and Eoin Corby (28.64). In the women’s event Aisling Haughey topped the podium in 31.32 and was joined by Eimear Doyle (32.91) in second while UCD’s Martyna Szmagara took bronze in 33.61.
