Breaststroke ace Darragh Greene collected the ‘Swimmer of the Meet’ Trophy as the Irish Open Swimming Championships came to a close on Sunday evening. Greene’s 200m Breaststroke swim on Thursday was the closest time to a World Record at the event in 2:10.05. The National Centre Dublin swimmer had set Irish and Championship Records in the swim as well as going under the consideration time for World Championships.

The 5-day Championships saw 5 new Irish Records, 2 Irish Junior Records and 7 Championship Records as well as over 20 consideration times met for this Summer’s International Meets.

Jordan Sloan came close to his 200m Freestyle Irish Record in this morning’s heats swimming a second fastest time ever of 1:47.63. The National Centre Dublin swimmer went on to take gold and the National Title in 1:48.44 this evening with Jack McMillan (1:48.56) and Robbie Powell (1:49.65) completing the podium. The top four combined times from the event were also under the consideration time for a 4x200m Freestyle Relay at World Championships.

Sloan’s National Centre Dublin team-mate Brendan Hyland took his fourth National Title in the 100m Butterfly. Hyland, who had set National Records in both the 200m Butterfly and 200m Individual Medley already this week, climbed atop the podium for the eighth consecutive year in the event, with a time of 53.07.

Ellen Walshe continued her impressive form with another lifetime best swim to take the 100m Butterfly National Title. The Templeogue swimmer edged closer to the Irish Record of 1:00.21 with a time of 1:00.44 for her fourth Title this week, adding to 50m and 200m Butterfly and 400m Individual Medley Titles.

National Centre Dublin’s Conor Ferguson added gold to 50m Backstroke gold and 100m silver in the 200m event. Ferguson was impressive touching in 2:00.07, ahead of team mate Sean Scannell. Scannell, who clocked 2:04.40, was under the consideration time for European Junior Championships.

Sophie Maguire of Drogheda claimed a first ever National Title in the Women’s 200m Backstroke. Maguire touched in 2:17.30 ahead of 2018 champion Maria Godden (2:19.73)

Ards’ Amelia Kane, who had climbed the podium twice already this week, took her first gold medal in the 1500m Freestyle Final. Kane, who made the consideration time for European and World Junior Championships earlier this week, cruised to victory in 17:42.49.

Hannah Miley, having already topped the podium four times this week, took a fifth commemorative gold in the 200m Individual Medley. The two-time British Olympian touched in 2:15.96. NAC’s Orla Adams took the National Title in 2:17.83.

National Performance Director Jon Rudd was impressed with this weeks Championships commenting “After five exciting and full days of racing, we can now all reflect on some fine swimming and the continued progress of our sport in Ireland. With seven Irish records broken across the meet (five Senior and two Junior) and another six Championship records re-written, we knew that we had to be on to a good thing. We have a number of swimmers that have now put their hats in the ring for our National Teams this summer, including that of the World Championships in Korea, the meet where we will focus very much on Olympic relay qualification. Congratulations to all of the athletes and their coaches this week who have given us what we are all looking for from a Trials; lifetime best performances, ideally in the heats and then delivering something even faster in the final. Onwards and upwards Swim Ireland, we have a summer to look forward to”
Swimmers now prepare for this Summer’s International Meets with team announcements coming in April.
