O presidente britânico de natação, Maurice Watkins CBE, presenteou com uma touca de natação britânica a sua santidade, o papa, em uma reunião recente.

Watkins foi convidado para uma audiência com o Papa Francisco no Palácio Apostólico do Vaticano junto com o Presidente da Federação Italiana de Natação, Paolo Barelli, e vários nadadores internacionais como parte do evento promocional do Troféu Sette Colli que aconteceu em Roma..

E para marcar a reunião, o Papa Francisco, recebeu um presente, uma touca de natação Tyr personalizada.

Ele disse: “Foi uma grande honra ter a oportunidade de encontrar o papa e presenteá-lo com este boné.

“Ele realmente entendeu os valores e dedicação envolvidos no esporte de alto desempenho e o poder que tem para unir as pessoas.”

Comentando sobre o esporte como um todo, o Papa Francis acrescentou: “Como qualquer atividade esportiva, se praticada com lealdade, a natação se torna uma oportunidade de formação de valores humanos e sociais, para fortalecer o corpo junto com caráter e força de vontade e aprender a conhecer e aceitar um ao outro como companheiros “.

Barelli foi convidado a discursar para a comunidade global de natação presente, na qual ele disse: “Santidade, nós, esportistas, todos falamos a mesma língua; compartilhamos os mesmos valores: o desenvolvimento da humanidade, tolerância recíproca que se transforma em solidariedade significativa” e a quebra de todas as barreiras, para construir pontes”.

British Swimming Chairman meets the Pope

British Swimming Chairman Maurice Watkins CBE presented a British Swimming cap to his Holiness, The Pope, at a recent meeting.

Mr Watkins was invited to an audience with Pope Francis at the Vatican’s Apostolic Palace with LEN and Italian Swimming Federation’s President Paolo Barelli and several international swimmers as part of the Sette Colli trophy event taking place in Rome.

And to mark the meeting he took a gift, a personalised Tyr swimming cap.

He said: “It was such an honour to be given the opportunity to meet with the Pope and present him with this cap.

“He genuinely understood the values and dedication involved in high-performance sport, and the power it has to bring people together.”

Commenting on the sport as a whole Pope Francis added: “Like any sporting activity, if practised with loyalty, swimming becomes an opportunity for formation in human and social values, to strengthen the body together with character and will power and to learn how to know and accept each other as companions.”

Mr Barelli was invited to give a speech to the global swimming community present, in which he said: “Holiness, we sportspeople, all speak the same language; we share the same values: the development of mankind, reciprocal tolerance which grows into meaningful solidarity and sustainment, the vanquishing of all barriers, the building of all bridges.”
