Ryan bateu seu recorde irlandês de 50m costas esta manhã para conseguir o terceiro melhor tempo do mundo no evento deste ano, com apenas dois americanos sendo mais rápidos. O atleta de 24 anos liderou as preliminares em 24,32 segundos, tirando quatro décimos de segundo de seu melhor anterior de 24,72. 

Falando depois da prova Ryan comentou ‘Eu nadei como deveria, fiquei muito feliz com isso, eu tive bons competidores, eu só tenho que voltar hoje à noite e nadar mais rápido.
O atleta de 18 anos, Conor Ferguson também garantiu um lugar nas semifinais nos 50m costas. O nadador do National Center Dublin quebrou o seu próprio recorde júnior irlandês para terminar em 4º na sua série e avançar em 11º na geral com 25.08. Ferguson fez o 16º melhor tempo de 25.24.
Ryan nadará na segunda semifinal desta noite às 17h25 com Ferguson nadando na primeira. 
Os recordes continuaram a aparecer quando Darragh Greene foi para a piscina para os 100m peito.  Greene nadou para1:00.20 tirando um centésimo de segundo de seu recorde de abril deste ano (1:00.21). 

Comentando depois da prova, Greene disse: ‘Estou muito feliz por voltar, meu foco principal era apenas voltar a nadar. Esta manhã eu não estava feliz, então isso me custou um pouco, é bom visualizar um erro para melhorar, então eu sei o que trabalhar nesta noite.
Greene avançou em 11º lugar com o campeão olímpico e mundial Adam Peaty liderando com 57.89. O nadador do National Center Dublin compete na segunda semifinal desta noite às 17h39. 
O Revezamento Livre 4x100m da Irlanda, Ryan, David Thompson, Jordan Sloan e Robbie Powell finalizaram com um terceiro recorde irlandês. O quarteto tirou quase dois segundos do recorde de 2017 (3:19.39) com Powell em último fechando o tempo de 3:17,55.

Swim Ireland: Blistering Start for Irish Swimmers in Glasgow

Irish swimmers got the Glasgow 2018 European Championships underway this morning with impressive performances across the board including three semi-finalist places, three Irish senior and a junior record and a European top time from Shane Ryan.
Ryan smashed his Irish Senior 50m Backstroke record in this morning’s heats to post the third fastest time in the World in the event this year, with only two Americans being faster. The 24-year-old topped the preliminaries in 24.32 seconds, taking four tenths of a second off his previous best of 24.72.
Speaking after the race Ryan commented ‘I executed the race as I was supposed to, I was really happy with it, with the time, I had good competitors, I’ve just got to go back tonight and swim faster and just get in a lane for finals’
18-year-old Conor Ferguson also secured a semi-final place in the 50m Backstroke. The National Centre Dublin swimmer broke his own Irish Junior Record to finish 4^th in his heat and advance in 11^th overall in 25.08, Ferguson knocked .16 off his best time of 25.24.
Ryan will take a centre lane in this evening’s second semi-final at 5.25 pm with Ferguson swimming in the first semi-final.
The records continued to roll in when Darragh Greene took to the pool for the 100m Breaststroke heats. In a stacked field Greene swam to a new Irish best of 1:00.20 taking one hundredth of a second off his Irish record from April this year (1:00.21).
Commenting after the race Greene said ‘I’m delighted to get back, my main focus was just to get back and to have a pb is more than that so I’m delighted overall. This morning I wasn’t happy with my turn or breakouts so it cost me a good bit, it’s good to have that mistake and still get a pb from it so I know what to work on this evening.’
Greene advanced in 11^th place with Olympic and World Champion Adam Peaty leading the field in 57.89. The National Centre Dublin swimmer competes in this evening’s second semi-final at 5.39pm.
Ireland’s 4x100m Freestyle Relay of Ryan, David Thompson, Jordan Sloan and Robbie Powell completed the morning with a third Irish Senior Record. The quartet took almost two seconds off the 2017 record (3:19.39) with Powell taking them home in 3:17.55 to finish fourth in their heat and twelfth overall.
