Irish Para Sporting History made in the World Para Swimming Championships London 2019
5 anos ago 0
The Irish para swim relay team of Ellen Keane, Amy Marren, Nicole Turner and Ailbhe Kelly made history as they took to the block as the first ever Irish Para Swim team. Unfortunately, things did not go entirely to plan as the team suffered a DQ on their way to an 8th place finish in a race where Great Britain set a new World Record of 4:36:31.
The race marked the last international race for Ailbhe Kelly who announced her retirement earlier this week and she certainly delivered as the first swimmer in the pool finishing one second faster than she had in her individual race earlier this week;
“I couldn’t have had a better last race, the first ever relay for an Irish Paralympic team it’s such an honour, and the fact that my last race I got to be joined by my teammates for that, I think it’s just so special and so few people get to have that so I feel really lucky to have had such an amazing experience there, we all really enjoyed it, we knew no matter what the outcome was we wanted to have fun and soak up the moment so I’m really glad I did that. It’s a small bit bittersweet for me, it’s a little bit said but I have to just appreciate moments like this, moments like this are what made such great memories that I’ll cherish forever.”
Amy Marren, who swam in the anchor leg of the race was taken aback by the support that was in the London Aquatics Centre for Ireland tonight “It’s a huge honour, it really is, I mean we had a lot of Irish in the crowd tonight so that was really cool, to look up and see the flags and see friends and family and then just everyone cheering us on and obviously Ailbhe’s last race, it’s been an honour to swim with Ailbhe, even though I’ve only known her for a short amount of time, she has really a heart of gold, so proud to be racing alongside her.”
