Paltrinieri: “A motivação é a mesma de sempre”
Mais de 1.000 atletas, mais de 200 jornalistas e mais de 40 empresas de radiodifusão – a European Aquatics está pronta para apresentar o maior espetáculo novamente, como disse o presidente Paolo Barelli na coletiva de imprensa da LEN na véspera do Campeonato Europeu em Glasgow. Dois grandes nomes da natação estavam presente, o campeão olímpico, mundial e europeu Gregorio Paltrinieri e o duplo detentor do título, David Verraszto. Eles estão na melhor forma e desejosos de continuar ganhando as medalhas de ouro.

O presidente da LEN, Paolo Barelli, teve o prazer de anunciar que o Campeonato Europeu terá a participação de mais de 1.000 atletas nas quatro disciplinas aquáticas. “Na natação teremos 47 federações nacionais com 645 nadadores e deixe-me enfatizar que a LEN tem 52 membros e 47 estão aqui com os competidores, este é um número brilhante”, disse Barelli na entrevista coletiva de abertura. No mergulho, 23 FNs entraram enquanto os eventos de natação artística e natação em águas abertas apresentam atletas de 22 FNs cada.

O presidente enfatizou que a Liga Européia de Natação está convencida de que o novo formato do Campeonato Europeu com seis esportes em Glasgow e o atletismo em Berlim seria um tremendo sucesso no mercado esportivo. “Esperamos excelentes números de audiência e grande cobertura da mídia e, claro, performances fantásticas de nossos atletas. Agora, o campo é seu”, disse o Sr. Barelli, dando a palavra aos dois grandes nomes da natação sentados ao lado dele na conferência.

Gregorio Paltrinieri conquistou – ou melhor, varreu – todos os títulos em disputa nos últimos cinco anos e desfruta de uma invencibilidade nos 1500m livres em torneios de longa duração, a motivação do italiano ainda é a mesma. “Estou aqui para vencer de novo, já que gosto do desafio como sempre”, disse o campeão olímpico. “Recentemente Mykhailo Romanchuk, da Ucrânia, começou a pressionar-me, e isto é óptimo porque sinto que tenho de melhorar todos os anos.”

Greg já tem algumas aventuras em natação em águas abertas, embora sua estréia no Campeonato Europeu não aconteça aqui. “O lago está muito frio aqui, mas eu comecei a nadar em águas abertas e talvez no próximo ano eu me teste no Campeonato Mundial e talvez tente me qualificar para as Olimpíadas. Eu amo a água aberta, mas você precisa de muita experiência para ter sucesso. ”

Outro titular, David Verraszto, cuja história de sucesso também começou em 2014, pretende se tornar o mais antigo vencedor dos 400m IM. “Este é um dos grandes desafios para mim aqui em Glasgow”, disse o atleta de 30 anos. “Acho que consegui chegar a uma boa forma, isso tenho que agradecer também a Gregorio, pois estávamos treinando juntos na Sierra Nevada.”

Os membros do Bureau LEN e a ligação com a natação, Pia Holmen, falaram sobre a estréia mundial de um novo evento, o revezamento misto 4x200m que certamente dá um valor extra aos campeonatos. O contato de mídia Per Rune Eknes acrescentou que este evento, com todos os novos recursos em transmissão e mídia, molda o futuro dos esportes e disse que estava feliz em ver que a LEN estava entre os primeiros a adotar as novas idéias.

European Championships – LEN Opening Press Conference Highlights

Paltrinieri: “The motivation is the same as ever”

More than 1,000 athletes, more than 200 journalists and more than 40 broadcasters – European Aquatics are ready to put on the greatest show once again, as President Paolo Barelli said in the LEN’s opening press conference on the eve of the European Championships in Glasgow. Two greats from the swimming meet, Olympic, world and European champion Gregorio Paltrinieri and double title-holder David Verraszto are in top shape and keen to continue their respective golden passages.

LEN President Paolo Barelli was happy to announce that the upcoming European Championships would see more than 1,000 athletes participating in the four aquatic disciplines. “Alone in swimming we will have 47 national federations with 645 swimmers and let me emphasise that LEN has 52 members and 47 are here with competitors, this is a brilliant number” Mr Barelli said at the opening press conference. In diving 23 NFs entered while the artistic swimming and open water swimming events are to feature athletes from 22 NFs apiece.

The President emphasised that LEN was convinced that the new format of the European Championships with six sports in Glasgow and athletics in Berlin would be a tremendous hit in the sport market. “We are expecting outstanding viewing figures and great media coverage and of course fantastic performances from our athletes. Now, the field is yours” Mr Barelli said, giving the floor to the two swimming greats sitting next to him at the conference.

Gregorio Paltrinieri clinched – or rather swept – all titles on offer in the past five years and enjoys an unbeaten run in the 1500m free in long-course majors, the Italian’s motivation is still the same. “I’m here to win again as I enjoy the challenge as much as ever” the Olympic champion said. “Recently Mykhailo Romanchuk from Ukraine have starting pressing me, and this is great as I feel that I have to improve every year.”

Greg has already got some adventures in open water swimming, though his European Championships premiere will not happen here. “The lake is just too cold here but I’ve started racing in open water and perhaps next year I will test myself at the World Championships and maybe make a try to qualify for the Olympics. I love open water but you need a lot of experience in order to be successful.”

Another title-holder, David Verraszto, whose success story also began in 2014, aims to become the oldest ever winner of the 400m IM. “This is one of the big challenge for me here in Glasgow” the 30 year-old said. “I think I’ve managed to reach a good shape, this I have to also thank to Gregorio whom I was training together in Sierra Nevada.”

LEN Bureau Members and swimming liaison Pia Holmen talked about the global premiere of a new event, the 4x200m mixed free relay which surely give an extra value to the championships. Media liaison Per Rune Eknes added that this event with all the new features in broadcasting and in media shapes the future of sports and said he was happy to see LEN was among the first ones to embrace the new ideas.
