With more than a billion viewers, the European Championships will be a huge hit

Seven sports, two cities, eleven days of excitements – the newly shaped European Championships offer those and much more in the coming fortnight. Glasgow and Berlin will host seven continental showcases parallel, and according to LEN President Paolo Barelli, aquatics will enjoy a major boost in all fields, first of all in media coverage.

The seven sports – aquatics, athletics, gymnastics, rowing, cycling, golf and triathlon – have a history of more than 450 years combined in staging European Championships. For the first time ever, they joined to hold their respective continental events parallel in the framework of the European Championships. Six sports are hosted by Glasgow while Berlin will organise the athletics event.

At the opening media event, the stakeholders all emphasised that this common venture can bore results never seen before. EAAF President Arne Hansen said this was going to be a great opportunity for the sports involved to achieve a reach none of them would be able to do on its own. “All the top athletes will take part in Berlin so we will witness the best event possible” the President told the press.

Paolo Barelli added, “we will be eagerly waiting for the numbers and I’m convinced that we will have viewing figures never seen before. All the aquatics stars are ready to show their best, for all of our global stars the European Championships are the absolute highlight of this season.”

The opening media event served as an occasion to reveal the magnificent Championships Trophy, the reward for the top nation whose athletes achieve the best results in all seven sports considered – LEN President Paolo Barelli will hand it over soon after all events concluded, on 12 August at the George Square in Glasgow.

The European Championships are set to start tomorrow with the first session of rowing – the European Aquatics Championships will kick off on Friday with the swimming meet (3-9 August), to be held in the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
