Men’s 800m free
Gold: Mykhailo Romanchuk (UKR) 7:42.96
“It’s a good result but I know that the time could have been much better. Though it’s not bad at all as I am the winner. It was a really successful European Championships for me, now come the holidays.”
Silver: Gregorio Paltrinieri (ITA) 7:45.12
“I am happy because I’m not in 100% shape because I had fevers in the last days. I want to congratulate Romanchuk. I just tried to my best in this race.”
Bronze: Florian Wellbrock (GER) 7:46.60
“Unfortunately I qualified for a side lane this made it difficult to see what was happening during the race. I could see the two leaders but almost never saw the Norwegian. I felt that the bronze was for him or myself as I saw only in the turns. I gave all I had in the last lap.”
Women’s 100m free
Gold: Sarah Sjostrom (SWE) 52.93
“I am very happy because I thought I wasn’t going to make as I felt really heavy over the last couple of metres. So at this moment I’m overjoyed with this gold.”
Silver: Femke Heemskerk (NED) 53.23
“I’m extremely happy. I hoped for the bronze, got silver, that’s amazing. But the most important is that I could make what we planned and managed to clock my season’s best.”
Bronze: Charlotte Bonnet (FRA) 53.35
“As we come towards the end of the championships I feel more tired. Nevertheless, it was very good to achieve my goal and to win a medal in this event.”
Men’s 50m breast
Gold: Adam Peaty (GBR) 26.09
“It was clear that I was aiming at the world record but to swim at home in front of this crowd just increases the pressure – while in the relay I feel more relaxed. I think a time of 25.5 should be possible if I’m bettering both the power and the technique.”
Silver: Fabio Scozzoli (ITA) 26.79
“I’m very happy since this is the best result we can achieve here because of Adam Peaty also swims in this race. I came here to get the silver, as the gold had been booked, I’ve just got it, so it’s great. Last year I was 6th in the World Champs, now I’m second, so I’m very satisfied.”
Bronze: Peter-John Stevens (SLO) 27.06
“I was preparing in the US and I am really happy that I could be here after some great preparations. It was a really good swim, this is my personal best, it couldn’t have been any better.”
Men’s 200m back
Gold: Evgeny Rylov (RUS) 1:53.36 ER
“I’m happy with the European record but I didn’t have too much power left over the last 50m. After all, it was a good swim.”
Silver: Radoslaw Kawecki (POL) 1:56.17
“I’m not too happy with my time and I’m now already looking forward to perform much better at next year’s World Championships.”
Bronze: Matteo Restivo (ITA) 1:56.29
“This is a dream and I want to dedicate this medal to my coach because he is doing a great job. This is my second participation with the Italian national team after Budapest 2017 and I’m very happy because I improved a lot, beat my personal best as well as the national record.”
Women’s 200m IM
Gold: Katinka Hosszu (HUN) 2:10.17
“This was coming from my heart. Obviously I needed to win this race and I’m really happy that I did it. Coming here and racing was a challenge itself so I’m really satisfied. This proved that I could race hard, no matter what are the circumstances. Now I’m more motivated than ever and I will train extremely hard and will focus solely on swimming in the coming years.”
Silver: Ilaria Cusinato (ITA) 2:10.25
“I am very happy and satisfied with this silver medal. I have to say that I didn’t realise that I was leading the race, Katinka has more experience and she won the gold at the end. I want to say thanks to the staff because we worked hard to get this medal. These European Championships are an incredible experience for me.”
Bronze: Maria Ugolkova (SUI) 2:10.83
“Oh, this was a very hard final for me. I’m totally exhausted. I’m really happy with this unexpected medal.”
Mixed 4x100m free relay
Gold: France 3:22.07 CR – Jeremy Stravius
“This is definitely the nicest relay we had here with the French team. As the team captain I’m very proud, our team spirit was really high and we won with our heads and with our skills, despite a logical tiredness we all feel towards the end of the championships Personally to end this event with a gold medal is rewarding.”
Silver: Netherlands 3:23.97 – Nils Korstanje
“It was a spectacular race, a cool final. We always love finals, anything can happen there. The swims were pretty good, and we are content with the times.”
Bronze: Russia – 3:24.50 – Kliment Kolesnikov
“I’m happy as the bronze medal is better than nothing. We expected a medal, though I though we could do better.”
Diving
Women’s 10 m platform
Gold: Celine van Duijn (Netherlands) – 319.10 points
“It’s unbelievable, amazing! I was first in the morning, and it put pressure to me, but I tried not to concentrate on the points, just focus on my dives and try to do my job. The ninth position was my best in the platform until now in the Europeans, so what can I say? Hard work pays off.”
Silver: Noemi Batki (Italy) – 315.00 points
“After the qualification, a medal was the goal for me today. I was in the first position also in the morning after four dives, but made a mistake in the fifth, so in the final, after the fourth round, when I led the table again, I fully concentrated on my fifth dive to stay in a medal position. At the end I hoped that it can be a gold, but Celine was very balanced, she is very focused, worked a lot with good attitude, her last dive was more difficult than mine, so I’m really happy for her. It’s not a lost gold, but a won silver for me.”
Bronze: Maria Kurjo (Germany) – 308.15 points
“I don’t even know what to say other than that I am extremely happy. We’ve put a lot of work into it and I never thought it would work out that well and that I would be able to get three medals out of three events. I tried to focus on one dive after the other. After the third dive I was a bit disappointed obviously, but I tried to do what my coach tells me and to pay attention to his technical advice. I did not know what my competitors were doing. I saw here and there that they were good or not that good, but in the end I did not know where I was ranked and I just tried to do my thing.”
Synchronised 3m Mixed
Gold: Germany – 313.50 points
Tina Punzel:
“We are very happy, our synchronisation was very good, even from our first practices, and now it worked during the competition. We dived before the British team so we put the pressure on them, but I only focused on our dives.”
Lou Massenberg:
“Wow, it’s fantastic, I had two event is this Championship and I collect a gold medal after a silver – I’m extremely happy! We were able to control the whole competition, I admit that I watched the points of the rivals so I knew we were in a rivalry with Ross and Grace, the team of Great Britain. We started with the easy dives, but we succeed to do our best even at the difficult ones.”
Silver: Great Britain – 308.67 points
Ross Haslam:
“The Germans dived really well in training, came to play today and did a really good list. We knew it was going to be a tough competition and the Germans really found their form. I leave Grace to do what she does best and I try to follow in her shadow.”
Grace Reid:
“It is great to compete here in Edinburg, among familiar faces, where I learned to drive as a child and hear that Scottish accent, it helped me a lot. I enjoy very much that the championship is organised here. We are very pleased. We would have loved to take home the gold but the Germans really stepped up their game. I said to Ross afterwards that I’m really pleased it has gone so well”
Bronze: Ukraine – 291.81 points
Stanislav Oliferchyk:
“The synchro is one of my favourite events. It is a little distraction from the individual events where I have to jump higher and have to do harder dives. Here, I have to adapt to Viktoriya, so that everything is synchronised and the dives are easier, so I can relax a bit. We had some problems with the entry into the water. The synchronisation went really well. We trained enough, but we need to work on our entry.”
Viktoriya Kesar:
“Overall we dived quite well, but we need to be cleaner and work on the entry. Then hopefully we can do better next year.”
Open water swimming
Women’s 5km
Gold: Sharon van Rouwendaal (NED) 56:01.0
“The water was cold, we all knew it would be so. The race was very good. After 5min I felt really strong and was already ahead. After 1 km I turned around and there were only the two of us. I told myself to stay calm, pace yourself so I kept my rhythm. For the last kilometre or so I didn’t know who would be second and third but I knew I was winning for sure, especially during last 200m. Altogether it was an amazing race. It feels even more special to be the European Champion. This was the most beautiful race after the Olympics.”
Silver: Leonie Antonia Beck (GER) 56:17.8
“It felt good to be in the water. I did a good job. I quickly got ahead of the others. After 1,5 round I lost Sharon. I am satisfied with the silver medal as I gave my best here. I will be swimming 10km and the relay race. It felt good in the body-suit and there should be no problem to race in it in the longer distance.”
Bronze: Rachele Bruni (ITA) 56:49.7
“The water was good, it was a nice race. I would say that it was a very good preparation for the 10km tomorrow. I am happy that I managed to win a medal. It gives me a lot of strength and confidence for the next event.”
Men’s 5km
Gold: Kristof Rasovszky (HUN) 52:38.9
“At the first part I didn’t want to swim on a high pace as I knew that the French guys would come anyway and without reserves it would have been much tougher to fight with them in the finish. At the beginning of the second I sat back a bit, let Axel (Reymond) to go upfront to gather some strength for the last part. The tactics worked well, in the finish I managed to build some lead and keep till the end. I feel I have more for tomorrow as I wish to repeat this performance in the 10km as well. I’ve come for a medal, got this gold so the rest will be much more easier – no pressure, just fun, more medals!”
Silver: Axel Reymond (FRA) 52:41.7
“I usually swim 25km so I am not used to this. I did everything I expected to. I swam good, had a good feeling and controlled my swimming. When I saw that I could not take over the Hungarian swimmer I decided to keep my second position. I focused and gave my maximum to maintain it.”
Bronze: Logan Fontaine (FRA) 52:44.4
“The water felt hot with a wetsuit. I tried to swim left of Axel. I didn’t feel good so I decided to stay close to him. Every time I tried to press and get ahead he blocked me so I could not pass. Let’s see how it unfolds in the 10km.”
